Satcoms recognised as key factor in crew retention

An Inmarsat-hosted panel discussion, featuring a selection of maritime experts, has highlighted the importance of onboard satellite communications in retaining seafarers.

Addressing the panel, Piers Cunningham, Inmarsat’s head of maritime business, said: “Onboard communications can enhance the quality of life onboard, whether that is using voice, email or internet.”

He also explained how the technological boom over the past five years was necessitating the creation of roles for onboard IT and communication specialists.

Dynamic option
Vizada Solutions director Reinhold Lüppen added: “There are examples of larger shipping companies being willing to invest in renewing their communication equipment and IT.

“So, if they see that communication will save in other areas, it is easy to convince them about satellite communication.”

Ian Canning, Stratos’ vice-president of marketing and product management, said that the “more dynamic shipowners and operators” offering onboard satcoms would be more likely to keep hold of their seafarers in the long term.

Seagoing trade is expected to grow by 60 per cent by 2020, making it imperative for shipowners and managers to hold on to key personnel.

The panel was chaired by Sean Maloney, publisher of Ship Management International (SMI).
