Inmarsat C distress call helps repel pirate attack.

Inmarsat C came to the rescue when pirates tried to attack a 53,500 DWT bulk carrier in the Indian Ocean on 11 February.

Five pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and assault guns towards the crew quarters and attempted to board the vessel. But the ship alerted naval units in the vicinity by sending an Inmarsat C distress priority piracy alert and the raiders broke off the attack.

Piracy is becoming an increasing problem for shipping companies. According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), pirates attacked more than 130 merchant ships in the Gulf of Aden last year.

In January this year, Somali pirates released the Saudi supertanker, Sirius Star, which they had held for two months. When the IMB receives a piracy alert, it relies on the Inmarsat C SafetyNET system to broadcast detailed piracy alerts to all vessels in the region.
