Loss of Iridium Satellite

Yesterday (February 10), Iridium lost an operational satellite. According to information shared with the company by various U.S. government organizations that monitor satellites and other space objects (such as debris), it appears that the satellite loss is the result of a collision with a non-operational Russian satellite. Although this event has relatively limited impact on Iridium’s service, the company is taking immediate action to address the loss. The Iridium constellation is healthy, and this event is not the result of a failure on the part of Iridium or its technology.

The Inmarsat-4 F3 satellite has successfully completed in-orbit tests that confirm its onboard systems are performing as required to provide commercial service. The new addition to the Inmarsat-4 (I-4) fleet has now begun the journey to its final on-station location at 98 degrees west, where it is currently scheduled to enter service on 7 January 2009. The I-4 F3 will be positioned more directly over the Americas than the I-4 F2 spacecraft currently serving the region.
